On October 7, Sahmyook University marked its 118th anniversary with a ceremony held at the Hong Myung-ki Hall in the Johan Building. Founded on October 10, 1906, in Sunan, South Pyeongan Province as “Uimyung School,” the university relocated to its current address at 815 Hwarang-ro, Nowon-gu, Seoul, in 1949.
The event drew over 300 attendees, including President Je Hae-jong, department heads, faculty, staff, and students.
The ceremony commenced with a prayer by Vice President Park Cheol-joo, followed by a special performance from first-year theology students. Chaplain Choi Kyung-cheon shared remarks, and the Semelodia Singers performed, leading up to President Je’s commemorative speech. Awards were also given to long-serving staff members (30, 20, and 10 years) and individuals recognized for their contributions to the university.
In his address, President Je highlighted the importance of the celebration, stating, “This occasion is about remembering our past and shaping our future.” He acknowledged the sacrifices of the university’s pioneers and expressed confidence that the combined efforts of everyone at Sahmyook would lead to an even brighter future.
He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to “the dedicated students striving for excellence and the passionate staff supporting our mission,” and extended thanks to alumni and predecessors for their contributions throughout the university’s history.
Sahmyook University is launching various activities to commemorate its 118th anniversary. The university museum is currently hosting a special exhibition titled “Sahmyook People, Sahmyook Love – Special Exhibition of Donated Collections,” running from October 1 to 30.
A commemorative concert is scheduled for October 12 at the 70th Anniversary of Mission Hall (Main Auditorium), while a tennis tournament for sister institutions will take place on November 3. Additionally, a “YouTube Content Contest” for students is open until November 15.
