In a significant contribution to the academic community, Seegene Medical Foundation has donated advanced research equipment worth 245 million won to Sahmyook University.
The donation includes 17 cutting-edge DNA analysis and diagnostic devices, such as a Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) and a CFX96 Real-Time PCR System. These tools are set to enhance the research capabilities in various departments, including Chemical and Biological Sciences, Pharmacy, and Food and Nutrition.
As the leading disease testing organization in South Korea, Seegene Medical Foundation sought to repurpose the advanced equipment acquired during the COVID-19 pandemic for greater research utility in the post-pandemic era. The foundation’s decision to donate to Sahmyook University reflects its commitment to fostering academic research. This initiative will provide students with access to high-end equipment, preparing them with practical experience that can be directly applied in their future careers, especially in research-oriented roles.
A university representative remarked, “Having access to advanced equipment that is typically hard to find in academic settings will allow students to engage in hands-on experiments and research, greatly benefiting their education. This will also serve as a vital resource for faculty and graduate students in their research endeavors.”
Sahmyook University and Seegene Medical Foundation have been collaborating since 2016, formalized by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Over the years, the foundation and its chairman, Cheon Jong-ki, have generously contributed a total of 640 million won in scholarships and development funds to the university.
These funds have supported the education of international researchers from countries like Vietnam, China, India, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and the Philippines, all associated with the university’s Chromosome Research Institute. Several of these scholars have continued their journey by joining Seegene Medical Foundation after graduation, contributing to overseas research projects.
Sahmyook University President Je Hae-jong expressed heartfelt appreciation for the generous support from Seegene Medical Foundation, stating, “We are committed to ensuring that students are well-prepared to take on significant roles in future research and industry with the help of this equipment.”
Han Kyu-seob, the medical director of Seegene Medical Foundation, emphasized the importance of this partnership, saying, “We aim to strengthen our collaboration with Sahmyook University to nurture exceptional research talent. We hope the donated equipment will greatly assist researchers in their work.”
