Professor Lee Taek-jun from the Department of Animal Resources Science at Sahmyook University has uncovered a community of marine organisms in the previously unexplored depths below 50 meters, where little research on marine life has been conducted.

In collaboration with the National Marine Biodiversity Institute, Professor Lee’s research team conducted a marine life survey in May around the underwater areas of Munseom, Beomseom, and Seopseom in Jeju, focusing on depths of 50 meters. The survey utilized trimix diving techniques, which involve a mixture of oxygen, helium, and nitrogen to minimize the risk of decompression sickness and extend dive duration.

The findings revealed that the marine life community at 50 meters differed significantly from the densely populated environments found between 20 and 30 meters, which are home to various species of whip corals and sponges. Notably, five new species of copepods, previously unknown, were discovered in association with sponge animals at Munseom. Copepods are a dominant component of marine ecosystems and are key members of zooplankton.

Professor Lee and the National Marine Biodiversity Institute plan to focus on further investigating marine life communities at depths greater than 50 meters. They also intend to publish their newly discovered species in domestic and international journals and include them in the national marine species catalog.

Professor Lee remarked, “The 50-meter depth zone has remained unexplored until now, making it a mysterious area. This achievement significantly expands the scope of marine life research beyond previous limits.”

As a marine biologist employing specialized trimix diving techniques, Professor Lee conducts research activities in deep-sea regions (depths over 50 meters). It is rare for researchers to perform specialized dives themselves in global marine research.
