Kim Ki-gon, former president of Sahmyook University, and his family have generously donated 50 million won to establish the “Junmin Scholarship,” aimed at supporting international students. Over the years, Kim and his family have contributed a total of 111.75 million won to the university in development and scholarship funds.

Starting this year, the Junmin Scholarship will provide annual support to four international students for the next 15 years, with each recipient receiving 1 million won. The scholarship targets students facing financial difficulties, particularly those studying theology with aspirations to become pastors in their home countries or those who demonstrate strong missionary values and leadership potential to serve as future church leaders.

The story of the Junmin Scholarship began decades ago, inspired by Kim’s two sons, Hyun-jun and Hyun-min, whose names are reflected in the fund. It started modestly, with each family member contributing 1 million won, amounting to 3 million won in total. Despite their young age, Kim’s sons joined the effort enthusiastically, donating money they had earned through part-time jobs. This family initiative became a valuable lesson in generosity and giving back.

As the years passed, the family continued to grow the fund, which now amounts to tens of millions of won. The Junmin Scholarship has not only supported students but also funded global missionary work.

Kim expressed his hopes for the scholarship, saying, “Although it’s not a large sum, this fund represents the heartfelt dedication of our family. I hope it will be used to create meaningful opportunities for the recipients.”

Sahmyook University President Je Hae-jong added, “The Junmin Scholarship goes beyond financial assistance—it reflects the legacy of Pastor Kim and his family’s commitment to sharing and serving. We will ensure that this generous contribution is managed thoughtfully and continues to inspire others.”
