Practice Sharing Through Community Chest Activity with 20 Years History
\nPorridge of Love and Quarantine Items Delivered to Lonely Elders in Nowon District<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n

SU Social Welfare majors have drawn people\u2019s attention as they practiced the theories of \u201ccommunity chest\u201c they learned in class and delivered collections to support senior citizens who live alone in Nowon District, Seoul. The community chest activity has been practiced for more than 20 years as a part of the course called Community Social Welfare, which is one of the core courses of the major.<\/p>\n

SU Social Welfare Professor Jeong Jong-hwa and the students had a donation delivery ceremony at Sanggye-dong Elder Care Support Center in Nowon, Seoul on June 23, and delivered the \u201cporridge of love\u201c and preventive items for COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Last semester, the prospective social workers took Community Social Welfare, one of their mandatory classes, from Professor Jeong. This course teaches theories and practical know-how about community social welfare in a systematic manner, including the basic concepts, marketing, strategies, and how to develop supporters of a community chest.<\/p>\n

The students not only interviewed officials from the Community Chest of Korea but also planned, organized, and carried out the fund-raising project all by themselves. Through this activity, which has been going on for over 20 years, a number of single-household elders, disabled, and North Korean children received help. In recognition of the long-standing goodwill and work, in 2018, this project was selected as one of the best practicums among all the university community chest activities by the Community Chest of Korea.<\/p>\n

As the COVID-19 pandemic hampered offline fund-raising, the project organizers for the spring semester this year devised a plan for an online activity. Under the catchphrase \u201cBe the vaccine for single-household elders,\u201c they passionately promoted the campaign on social media for 44 days, collecting a total of 1.3 million won.<\/p>\n

The campaigners purchased and delivered \u2018porridge of love\u2019 for familyless and toothless elders who often struggle with eating. They also delivered some quarantine items to the Nowon Elder Care Support Center.<\/p>\n

Shin Hyeon-ji, a junior in the SU Department of Social Welfare, said, \u201cIt felt great to see those lonely elders smile when we delivered small gifts of love to them.\u201d Adding, \u201cAlso, this activity was meaningful to us because it provided us an opportunity to put what we learned in the classroom into action.\u201d<\/p>\n
