Oh-dal Kwon, Retired Professor and Kyeong-hee Lee, Former High school Principal Say They Are “Repaying Kindness Received”… Cumulative Donation of 6.5 Million Won.

Retired Professor Oh-dal Kwon of Sahmyook University and his wife, Kyung-hee Lee, former principal of Sahmyook Middle and High School, visited the campus 8 years after retirement to donate their maturity savings of 30 million won toward university development.

Since joining the Department of Horticulture (currently, Department of Environmental Horticulture Design) in 1988, Professor Kwon devoted himself to the development of the university by serving as the Head of Academic Affairs, Dean of Student Affairs, and Dean of the College of Science and Technology. After 26 years of teaching, Kwon retired in 2013.

Former Principal Lee began her teaching profession at Honam Sahmyook Middle School in 1975. She devotedly cultivated and nurtured students at Hankook Sahmyook Middle and High School, Seoul Sahmyook High School, and Honam Sahmyook Middle and High School, until her retirement in 2013.

After retirement, the couple opened a savings account of a 5-year installment payment, hoping to express their gratitude to Sahmyook University. When their deposits matured after paying 500,000 won every month from their living expenses, they withdrew the savings and donated it for the development of the university.

It is not first time that Professor Kwon has donated to Sahmyook University, as he had given 15 million won while in office, and another 20 million won as scholarship funds in 2013, shortly after his retirement. The recent 30 million won makes his cumulative donation total 65 million won.

Kwon said, “Sahmyook University is where I spent my entire career life, met so many students, and got to form precious relationships with great people. This campus was our first home as a couple, and my wife worked at Hankook Sahmyook Middle School, which is located on this very campus. We have received so much from the university.”

Kwon continued, “We’re only repaying the tiniest bit of the kindness and grace that we have been blessed by. I thank my wife who gladly agreed to make this donation.”

President Il-mok Kim responded, “In honor and respect of your precious will and mind, we will put your donation to good use for cultivating talented individuals.”
